Bird banding   Licensed bird banders on the school's staff capture birds in mist nets, and collect data about individual birds. This data forms part of a national database. Students can use some of this data for analysis back at school. Society & environment

Bird ecology   Students practise the skills of bird watching and identification. They observe bird behaviour and discuss how different species fit in the overall ecology of different habitats. Links are made with bird species from student's local environments. Society & environment

Ecocentre   A resource room containing living and preserved animals, some of which students can handle. Focus can include classification, adaptations, habitats, endangered species and caring for captive animals. Science

Freshwater life   Students collect samples of invertebrates using simple stocking and wire nets, and observe them using magnifiers and microscope. Focus can be on identification, classification, feeding relationships, and indicators of water quality. Society & environment

Natures recyclers   Students look for fungi and leaf litter invertebrates. They observe them using magnifiers and microscopes. The focus is on how nature's recyclers release nutrients locked in dead plant and animal material and return them to the soil. Society & environment

Plant propagation   In the school's plant nursery, students propagate mainly local species from seed or cuttings. Includes basic nursery procedure and selecting appropriate plants for garden and landscaping projects.
